About the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education


The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KNPE) is one of six departments in the College of Education. The department has about 40 faculty and instructors serving about 600 undergraduate majors pursuing Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed. Teacher Licensure) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Athletic Training and Kinesiology. Twenty-one faculty members comprise the graduate faculty, which graduates 30-40 students per year. The department supports the equivalent of 25 full-time graduate assistantships. Master's degree programs include an Master of Science (M.S.) in Sport Management and a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) with specializations in adapted physical educationexercise physiologypedagogy and curriculum development, and exercise and sport psychology

Global Presence

NIU is a global institution with academic, research, and familial ties to a number of countries around the globe. Parallel to these ties, our department also has a strong international presence -- with faculty hailing from countries such as South Korea, South Africa, United Kingdom, and Venezuela. Additionally, we have established research collaborations, workshops and exchanges with other countries such as Belize, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. As a result, our educational philosophy combines academic and service-based programs that encourage students and faculty to become more aware and more socially responsible citizens of tomorrow's world and work jointly to help solve problems -- both globally and domestically.
