The College of Education has established the Julianna Gehant Memorial Scholarship, to celebrate the life, the values, and the indomitable spirit of this young woman who lost her life in the campus shooting on February 14, 2008.
Julianna was a dean’s list student majoring in elementary education in the College of Education. She served her country proudly for thirteen years and one month in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves. The 32-year-old soldier was promoted to Sergeant First Class (E-7) in November 2007 and had served tours of duty in Bosnia, Tonga, and Thailand, where she helped to build barracks and schools. Julianna’s experiences as a soldier influenced her career path; she took classes at military bases around the world and looked forward to the day when she would lead her own second-grade classroom.
